The First United Methodist Church Preschool and Mother's Day Out program is a ministry of the church which has long lasting educational and spiritual effects on children and families in the Dyersburg community. We are proud of our program which includes a kindergarten-readiness curriculum, developmentally appropriate "center-based" activities, bible story lessons and music instruction which culminates in a Christmas and Spring program for the parents. Also, social skills are developed and reinforced as children begin learning to live and share together in God's world.
It is our belief that the preschool child needs play opportunities to grow and develop as well as specific instruction in kindergarten readiness skills.
The small child explores and learns with all their senses - they touch, hears, smells, feels and even tastes! They learn through experiencing the world around them. We will strive to give your children an opportunity to try their hand at jobs of various kinds, therefore, to learn by doing.

Pretend Center - This area allows for impromptu and imaginative play initiated by the children. Through reenacting real-life situations the children gain confidence in themselves and knowledge of the world around them. Social development and language skills flourish through cooperative play.
Art Center - The goal of the art center is to provide a means for free expression of ideas and feelings. Through art activities, children explore themselves and the world around them. Art provides opportunities for reinforcing feelings of positive self-worth.
Block Center - Children learn a sense of accomplishment through block play. As the child builds with blocks, his imagination is continually stretching to develop new creations. In the initial stages of block play, the child usually tends to build on his own. As they enter into cooperative play, the children learn to share and help each other. At this point, dramatic play usually becomes a part of block play. Motor skills are also strengthened here.
Book Center - The book corner provides a relaxing atmosphere for children to explore books.
Discovery Center - Water and other materials (such as sand, oatmeal, beans, macaroni, confetti, etc.) are used to enhance fine motor skills through pouring and measuring. This also helps develop basic reasoning and pre-math skills.
Science Center - This center teaches cause and effect. It also helps develop basic reasoning and pre-math skills.
Game Center - Fine motor involves the use of the small muscles. Puzzles, peg and rubber band boards, Legos, Duplos, and stringing and stacking toys are just a few examples of activities that offer tactile stimulation necessary for fine motor development. Fine motor development is crucial to future writing, reading, and other processes. Children will also learn hands on counting in this center.
Circle Time/Group Time - This time encourages the development of listening skill, creative expression group interaction as well as language skills. Songs, fingerplays, stories, and discussions are incorporated into this time. This time is also a time to give instructions to your daily activities in all of your centers.
Writing Center - The writing center is a place where a child can explore different writing utensils and experiment with writing. One may find supplies in this center that one would find in an office desk (examples: pens, pencils, scissors, ink pads, stamps, stapler, hold punch, etc.)
Music/Listening Center - At this center you can alternate music instruments and a tape player with books or just a tape player and tapes.
Woodworking Center - This center helps with hand and eye coordination. This is a good way to work on small and large gross motor skills.
