Luke 10:29 - The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

This month’s communion offering will benefit the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. On any Thursday afternoon if you come by the church you will see a variety of people from our community who need a helping hand. I’d like to tell you about a couple of people who have been helped by this fund. One is a young lady who was recently laid off.

By the time she came for help she had already secured a new job but needed just a little help in paying that month’s rent. Another example is a couple who both work full time jobs and have six children. But even with two incomes sometimes there just isn’t enough money to keep the heat turned on. A small group of volunteers listen to the call of the needy each Thursday and, because of your generous donations, are able to meet so many of those needs. To date this year we have spent $18,419 and helped 261 different households, which are 622 family members, an average of about $70.00 in assistance per household. Out of these 261 households, 138 were people FUMC have never helped. We have also given out 270 sacks of groceries. There is so much need in our community and while local agencies are reducing their assistance programs, FUMC is surging forward to meet those needs.

Each month before we take communion we make the same confession to God:

Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy.
By donating to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund we provide our church with the means to love our neighbors and to hear and respond to the cry of the needy.
